Book Talk

Well, it's March (hence the new layout), so it's time for book reviews. Here's what I had my nose in last month.

Midnight Magic - Avi
A medieval mystery with lots of twists. It's definitely written for a young audience, but still very fun.

Down the Rabbit Hole - Peter Abrahams
Another mystery (must have been into that last month!) I really liked this one! I kept joking with my daughter that the protagonist reminded me of her. Great book!

Kira-Kira - Cynthia Kadohata
Wonderful story! This one was the Newberry winner in 2005 and I can see why. I loved the voice of the narrator. Make sure you have kleenex.

Their Eyes Were Watching God - Zora Neale Hurston
I've been in my first month of observation for student teaching and the American Lit class read this book last month. I've always heard that it was a classic and now I agree. It's a beautiful picture of life in the deep south in the 1920s. Hurston's language is some of the most amazing imagery I've read.

The Ballad of Lucy Whipple - Karen Cushman
This is the same author who wrote The Midwife's Apprentice (Newberry). She captures the mind and heart of a girl who ends up in a California mining camp in 1850 with her family. I loved the history mixed in with the timeless emotions.

Persuasion - Jane Austen
This is one Austen I had not read and my book club chose it for last month. I really liked it! (I know, it's Austen, how can I not.) Besides, the protagonist's name is Anne (even with an "e" it's good).

Finally, I'm afraid I have to NOT recommend one book, Great and Terrible Beauty. I finally had to stop reading it because it way crossed my comfort line.

So, I had to go to the library and get some more books for my bedside table. Thanks to Melissa for recommending I Capture the Castle. I love it so far.

What are you reading?

Ann, I just finished "this rough magic" this afternoon. It was so fun! Thanks for the recommendation. Towards the end, I was definitely on the edge of my seat and had to remind myself to breath.

If you liked that one then you must read: Nine Coaches Waiting, Madam Will You Talk, Thunder on the Right, and Airs Above the Ground. They are all by Mary Stewart and they're fantastic! I wish they'd turn one into a movie!

Melissa I agree with Ann. She got me hooked when I was just out of hight school and I couldn't put them down. Now I own most of them and I think that Nine Coaches Waiting is my favorite.

Well, I am still reading Eldest. Actually since I stopped reading it when I was reading House of Scorpions I guess I am not currently reading anything. I will have to get through parent teacher confrences this week and then maybe I will have time to read again.
