I Love Mr. Rogers

I havent posted all week! But it's been a crazy week! I've been student teaching in an ELL class for a week and a half now, and today I started teaching in an American Literature class too. Four periods straight of high school English in a very diverse school. Phew!

Earlier this week, when I came home, I turned on the TV to veg for a minute and eat some lunch before working on my lesson plans again. I happened to end up on PBS and Mr. Rogers was on. It was the last five minutes of the show and I sat there entranced. As he sang the ending song and changed his sweater and shoes I found myself singing along. I haven't watched Mr. Rogers since my kids were little (and I actually had time to watch PBS).

I love Mr. Rogers. I've loved him since I was old enough to watch PBS. I always thought he looked a little bit like my dad, so that was an automatic draw. But what else is it about him that is so captivating? I think maybe because he is so postitive. He's understanding. He's got a song about everything. And he always comes back the next day.

I loved reading the book of quotes that came out not long after he graduated from life. My favorite was the story he told about watching the news and being worried. His mother told him that anytime you see something hard or scary to "look for the helpers" or the people who are there to help. There are always helpers.

I think I just need to watch a little Mr. Roger's Neighborhood every now and then. It's a good reminder of all those things we learned as children. And if you want to hear a Mr. Rogers song... go
here.

Mr. Rogers is one of the most inspiring men I've ever seen. I also love the story of the "helpers," and it's true. Any catastrophe that may befall us will always be accompanied by those who are there to help. It's like George Elliot said, "What do we live for, if it is not to make life a little less difficult for each other."

I never thought about how he looks like dad. I couldn't help laughing when I read that and realized that I think it is the hair style. I loved Mister Rogers and I will always have fond memories associated with him.
