English Class - The Next Generation

Well, my students were working on a project today. I'm having them research and create posters on the real people that the author based his characters on in Zoot Suit. So, they did their research in the library and then we came back to the classroom to work on the posters in groups.

So, I'm circling the room, making sure everyone is staying on task, and I see one guy texting on his cell phone. I walked over and said, "I don't see that and I'm never going to see it again, right?" That's their first warning from me. Cell phones get confiscated for 24 hours on the second offense.

However, he turns his phone around and shows me the screen. It's a tiny readout of Google. "I'm looking up one more date on this guy!" he emphatically declares. As I squint, I can see that sure enough that's what he's doing!

I had to crack up. It must be 2008. A student needs a date on a person in history and looks it up quickly on his cell phone! I stood there while he got the date and then stayed until I saw him put it away. I thought it was too funny.

Man, we didn't even have the internet when I was a junior in high school!

I love technology! It is amazing what you can do with it and I LOVE it in teaching. I was suprized today when my principal came into my classroom after school and said that she got a grant (or something like that) to put ceiling mounted projectors in a few of the classrooms and she chose me as one of them. It isn't a done deal yet but I am excited at the thought.

That's crazy! I like to think I'm pretty tech savy, but I just would never think to do that. How funny.
