I watched my favorite movie (again) tonight. Joe vs the Volcano is the ultimate existential comedy, drama, romance. Everytime I watch it I find new symbolism. I love it!
One of the best lines is when Patricia tells Joe, "My father says almost the whole world's asleep. Everybody you know, everybody you see, everybody you talk to. He says only a few people are awake. And they live in a state of constant, total amazement."
That always makes me think when I hear it. Am I asleep? Or am I one of the few that are awake?
I think that sometimes I am the walking zombie, trudging off to work along a crooked path, all my energy sucked out of me, closed in a light-less and air-less place.
But sometimes I am awake. I see the moon, the sky, the millions of amazing miracles around me. And like Joe I want to stand up and say, "Thank you for my life."
There are so many good themes in the movie: overcoming fear and finding courage, walking a crooked road to find love, wanting to be away from the "things of man." I won't discourse on all of them here, but go watch the movie again if you haven't watched it recently.
If nothing else, you'll get a kick out of the two guys swinging into the gongs and then being carried away on stretchers!

I almost watched that on Friday! I love that movie too (I wonder where I got that from). I also see new stuff each time. For instant, for a long time (when I was still little) I didn't know that Meg Ryan was all three of the girls. The good thing is now that I have the basics out of the way I can look for the deeper meanings. Well, I'm not sure what the deeper meaning of the gong guys is, but maybe you have figured it out and can tell me.
