March Books

It's that time.... I've got some more book reviews. Here are a few good reads:

The White Giraffe - Lauren St. John - This story takes place on a game reserve in South Africa and tells about a girl and a white giraffe. I actually listened to this on CD and loved it because the voice talent could do all the accents perfectly. Good, clean story.

I Capture the Castle - Dodie Smith - Thanks again to Melissa for the recommendation. I loved the narrator in this book. The descriptions were marvelous and really made me pine to spend a summer in a place like this.

Avalon High - Meg Cabot - From the author of The Princess Diaries, this is a high school tale with a King Arthur twist. Really very clever and enjoyable.

First Boy - Gary Schmidt - It was wonderful to read a great YA book with a young man as the main character. He's a great character too - a good kid who has that farm work ethic. You know I always like those potato farmer boys.

Nancy Drew: Mystery of the Fire Dragon - Carolyn Keene - Not long after my post about Nancy Drew I was at my library's book sale. I found an original of this book! It even has that old book smell. It was great fun reading this again. I really cracked up at the little bits that set it in the late 50s - early 60s.

Over Sea, Under Stone - Susan Cooper - If anyone saw the recent film The Dark Is Rising, this is the first book in that series. I like how she has these kids in a quest and points out that this is just one of many times that the light and the dark have been in battle. I want to read all the other books in this series now.

Well, that's it for March. Not too many since I'm up to my eyes reading snippets of novels, short stories, and poetry to get ready for the cultural literature unit I'm teaching this month. I am finally going to begin Poison Study tonight - thank's Megan for that recommendation.

What are you reading?? I'll need more recommendations for April. :-)
